Today was a quieter sort of day, which is probably a good thing, as we are heading out to Whidbey Island and the Olympic Peninsula tomorrow, for two days.  The morning began with a semi-lie-in (until 8am) and then I started to sort through my photos from the last two days, and write about St Helens and Rainier.

That took the best part of three hours, so it was gone 11am by the time I got round to the jobs that Annie had left for Abbie and me.. The main one of which was to find campsites for the next two nights.  To cut a long story short, everywhere was either fully booked, or is first-come-first-served.  So we will just have to trust that we can find somewhere to sleep those nights!

After lunch Abbie and I headed into Seattle for coffee and doughnuts with Stephanie, and then to meet up with Annie, Janae (Andrew’s girlfriend) and Becky (Janae’s friend) for dinner.  I have to say, this afternoon I had two of the best coffees I’ve ever had, at Stumptown and then Milstead.  And, of course, some delicious all-American glazed doughtnuts..

For dinner we went to Blue Moon, a trendy little burger bar, which sells local beers.  I had a wheat beer, with notes of banana, and it was a real hit.  Even those who don’t like beer enjoyed it!

Just round the corner from Blue Moon is the Fremont Troll, a rather bizarre installation built under a bridge, and incorporating a genuine VW Beetle.  It was rather fun, especially when I climbed up on top of the head!  At least it gives you an idea of the scale of the thing..

Finally, we headed to Gas Works Park, with a great view of the city skyline, and some old gas works buildings by the side.  It was still quite a bit too light for a good night-time cityscape picture, but the lights were starting to come on, so it gave a reasonable idea of what it might look like.  I think we will have to come back later on Saturday evening to try and get a good picture.  If I can get one, I would love to; otherwise I’ll just have to come back!

The sisters decided it would be fun to spell ‘Ben’ on top of a solar calendar.  There was much amusement on the way back down, and Annie decided to dance inside the weird concrete tunnel structure, the purpose of which is a mystery to me.

Tomorrow we are going away until Saturday, so there won’t be many (if any updates) until then.  I will post if I can, but there are five of us going camping, in one car, so space is at an absolute premium!  That means unnecessary items (like my laptop) will be staying behind.

The Olympic National Park will be my last; I am leaving the USA on Sunday afternoon, for Vancouver.  It will be very sad to leave, which means I am all the more keen to make the most of the next three days.  Let’s hope it doesn’t rain too much.. the peninsula is apparently known for the large amount of rain that falls there.  It does contain a rainforest, after all.
