The person who had served us our wines at Akarua Winery recommended Cargo Brewery as a great place to stop off to taste some beers and have some lunch. As our journey from Te Anau to Lake Tekapo took us right past their front door, it seemed rude not to stop...

What we hadn’t realised was that Waitiri Wines and Cargo Brewery is based in a converted church... not that it inspired me or anything...

Outside, there are all sorts of activities, like croquet, a trampoline, a volleyball court – and there are places to eat in a tent, while a guy was casually brewing beer at the other end of it!

The beers, it has to be said, weren’t great. But the food and setting were amazing, and frankly it was lovely to be warm and dry!
